Handling the Heat

Chicago’s about to enter a serious heat wave–the forecast for today is 102! We have our window unit in and our fans ready, but Lori wisely grabbed a kiddie pool yesterday for some extra reinforcement. Here’s the dude splashing around.

Father’s Day Fun

I was lucky enough to have a great Father’s Day today! Lori and Mathias let me sleep in, treated me to breakfast, and then we all headed down to the Art Institute to see the Roy Lichtenstein exhibition, which was worth the trip.

Posing in front of the lions at the Art Institute. We seemed to have a much bettter day than that guy slumped over behind us.

After our bit of culture, we decided to head over to Millennium Park to let the little man splash around the fountains there. He cried as we slipped on his water shoes, but then he ran all around the plaza, having a great time.

Here’s a good pregnancy shot for all of you.

Mathias checks out the water.

Here’s a video of him splashing around. Later we dried off on the grass lawn at Pritzker Pavilion before heading home. One thing to note: in all these photos and videos, Mathias isn’t wearing diapers! Thanks to a great effort by Lori this week, he seems to be fully potty trained. (Knock wood.)

The Dude Turned Dos!

On Memorial Day weekend we had a birthday fiesta for the little man! Plenty of friends and family made it for quesadillas, cerveza and cake. It was a great time, and we set a new high record for toddlers simultaneously sprinting around our apartment. Sure, Mathias might have been scared of the candles on his cake, but we should be able to tamp down that pyrophobia by next year. (Well, hopefully not too much.)

Some monkeyshines with cousin Aubrey before we ignite the cake.

Saving a seat for the birthday boy.

Lori made the cake. It was delicious!

The Sichtermanns (well, Mathiases too)

The Seidlers/Pursells

And Faheys

Thanks to everyone who made it or sent birthday wishes–we appreciate it, and we had a wonderful time. The party had a fiery finish with the condo two doors west going up in flames! The whole roof was up, the street filled with emergency vehicles, and we even had to evacuate. Thankfully, no one was hurt, but we did get a picture of the family in front of a fire truck.

A Corrective to the Cuteness

Since most of what we post on here is “aww, that’s so cute” material, it seems good to offer the occasional balance. Take yesterday, where Mathias joined us for a nice dinner with friends at a local restaurant. It was a chatty evening, we were enjoying drinks as we ordered…and he proceeded to vomit like Linda Blair onto the floor, the table, and his stunned mother.

Lori handled it with grace, rushing him out of the restaurant. (Later, reviewing our response, we agreed we probably moved “probably one puke too late.”). They both headed home for a change of clothes, I cleaned things up, and we rallied later for some sandwiches and french fries.

He was fine after that–who knows what prompted it? But many thanks to our friends and the poor restaurant staff, all of whom took this little dude-splosion in stride.

Spring Break

Back in March, Lori and Mathias headed down to Florida to visit Oma and Opa for some spring-break fun! They had a great time: here are photos from their trip.

Surprise! Lori and Mathias found Oma and Opa were building a pool in the backyard!

Playing at the most fun park in Florida.

Mathias is more than happy to give Oma a kiss.

Mama, on the other hand, isn't so lucky. (Very uncharacteristic!)

Mathias enjoys some syrup at the Waffle House.

Oma got Mathias a little life jacket for pool time, and he loved it!

Here he runs into the community pool with mom.

Opa and Mathias got some good bouncing time in.

Oma goes for a handprint keepsake at a local make-your-own pottery place.

It was a great trip! And Lori and Mathias made it down again in April to take a dip in the pool--more on that later.

Trucks on the Windowsill

Here’s a little slice of life: Mathias tooling around with his trucks on the windowsill. Right now we always have trucks of all sizes scattered around our apartment; he likes to talk to himself as he rolls them back and forth. This video is only notable for how quiet he’s being as he plays.

Easter in the ER

Well, our Easter had a big surprise that didn’t involve candy coatings or egg-laying mammals. Instead, after a great Saturday visit from grandma and Michael Bennett, we woke up after a sleepless night with a sick Mathias to find the dude was breathing about twice as fast as he should have been.

To be on the safe side, we made our second holiday visit to the emergency room. We headed in around 8 a.m., and the doctors confirmed what we knew: he had a fever. He was breathing fast. They thought they heard a bit of wheezing in his lungs. So they prescribed a breathing treatment, where a mask is strapped over his face to pump in chemicals to open his airways–sort of like a five-minute burst from an inhaler.

This didn’t go over well. Already sick, Mathias cried just when the doctors and nurses (who were great) went for a listen with their stethoscopes. So when they strapped the mask on…oh boy. He tried to squirm away and rip the mask off, so we basically had to immobilize him, hold his little hands down and even hold the mask to his face when he figured out he could use his chin to shrug it off. Screaming the whole time, obviously.

Trying to calm him down, we assure him it was “almost done.” So that became a little tearful mantra for him: “Almost done,” he’d sob through the mask. “Almost done.”

His oxygen levels improved, but he was still breathing faster than he should have been, so they gave him two more breathing treatments and then a chest x-ray to make sure he didn’t have pneumonia. That came out clean, but they had to strap him into a little stool, Hannibal-Lecter style, to get a good image, which went over about as well as the breathing treatments.

Finally, after six hours, the doctors and us agreed that he’d be better off at home, even if his breathing still wasn’t ideal. Mathias was game; he’d been asking to go home since we got there, even putting his shoes on at 10:30. So they equipped us with an inhaler and breathing tube that fit over his face to deliver some more breathing treatments at home. We had to do that every four hours, including a 3 a.m. wake-up call, but we finally finished today!

Mathias with his inhaler.

He’s doing way better now. The day after his treatments, he was throwing stuff around the apartment, jumping around and shouting–all good signs of health.

He still seems a little traumatized though; he’s been waking up with nightmares that sounds like he’s in the hospital and has spent the past two nights in our bed. He’s also applied his heartrending “almost done” sob to bowls of cereal or diaper changes–anything he doesn’t want to deal with. But he’s healthy and happy and should be back to normal soon. Hopefully he doesn’t need another trip to the ER on the next big holiday!

Happy Birthday Aubrey!

This weekend we traveled to South Bend, the first time we’d all been there since Christmas! It was great. We savored some Rocco’s pizza with grandma and Michael Bennett. We downed a German pancake at Bibbler’s with the Polas. And we enjoyed cousin Aubrey’s third birthday (and a Dairy Queen ice cream cake) in her new house!

There were plenty of kids in attendance for that last one, so we all headed to the park down the block so little legs could burn off some steam. We piled everyone on for a few turns around the merry-go-round, and then adults and kids all rolled down the hill.

The kids were game to go round and round the merry-go-round. (My stomach can't even handle one spin anymore.)

Papa leads Mathias down the hill. All the others had already rolled ahead.

Mathias and Aubrey enjoy some of her spoils--a cowgirl hat and a princess castle.

Mr. Mohawk

Bath time is a good time to try out new hairstyles. Note the letters and numbers in the background—he’s crazy for them! He carries them all over the apartment, and we have to regather them every night for the bath.

Happy President’s Day!

I had the day off work, and I wanted to make sure I got out of the apartment! So while Lori heading to Starbucks to get some writing done, Mathias and I bundled up and headed to a nearby forest preserve.

He seemed to like it–he picked up sticks (some big ones, as you can see here), stomped in the mud, threw about 90 rocks from the pathway, and clambered over a few old, mossy stumps. I also spotted a woodpecker, which provided a welcome brush with nature. Hopefully we can all make it again soon!
